About the Artists

Saxophonist Tom Bergeron has been playing, studying, and teaching Brazilian music for decades. A retired professor of music — and now resident of Camp Sherman — Tom formed his first all-Brazilian-music band in 2012, and over the decades has collaborated with many Brazilian musicians in the US and in Brazil.

The fruits of one such collaboration will be presented in concert at Black Butte Ranch on 26 April, in the new Lodge. Duo Violão Plus One originated with two virtuoso guitarists from Rio de Janeiro, Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber, and their desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of two violões (Brazilian guitars) — both 6-string and 7-string.

During a visit to the Bay Area in 2015, they met percussionist Ami Molinelli and the musical connection was immediate. The trio navigates 20th century Brazilian popular music, emphasizing choro — Brazil’s original Afro-Brazilian musical genre — while also showcasing original works and inventive arrangements of samba and other genres.

The group’s critically-acclaimed first album, A História de Choro, presents a curated compendium of the genre, from the mid-19th Century to the present. When Ami contacted Tom about a tour the trio was booking for 2024, Bergeron suggested a collaboration and the die was cast. Tom, Rogerio, and Ami met up in Brazil shortly thereafter to rehearse and design the show.

The concert will feature music by Souza and Bergeron, along with a selection of classic and modern choros and sambas. Brazilian singer Rosi Bergeron will add lyrical sparkle to several of the classics on the program. This concert is a special presentation by Black Butte Ranch, in partnership with Tom Bergeron. It will take place in the beautiful Event Room in BBR’s new lodge. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
