Coming in August: With Adult/Child Golf School, Black Butte Invitational, August a time to bond

Golf can be the most solitary of games, often played as much between the ears as on the course. But golf is also typically best shared, making the game a paradox of sorts. Those who prefer their golf with a little companionship will be in luck in August at Black Butte Ranch, which will host a slew of golf events and learning programs in the month ahead that double as special bonding opportunities. This includes Black Butte Ranch’s Adult/Child Three-Day Golf Schools, which are open to golfers of all abilities and are designed for a young golfer to share [...]

Conditions Report: Glaze Meadow prepared for Oregon Amateur Championship

This is crunch time for the maintenance staff at Black Butte Ranch. The 107th Oregon Amateur Championship — which will be played June 20-25 at Glaze Meadow — is just days away. And the Oregon Am will bring together the finest golfers in the state for a single-elimination match-play tournament that is the state’s oldest. That means superintendent Phil Lagao and his crew are awfully busy pouring over Glaze Meadow to make sure that every detail of the course is just right. The crew always welcomes the challenge. “I like tournament prep,” Lagao said. “It gives focus to the [...]

Black Butte Ranch tees up golf show season in Portland

February can be a fantastic time for golfers. And that is not just because this has been an unseasonably warm week here in Oregon. This month marks the beginning of the golf show season, which is always a time we look forward to here at Black Butte Ranch. First up is the Portland Golf Show, which begins on Friday and runs through Sunday at the Oregon Convention Center. Then in April we will pay a visit to Sacramento, California, home of the 2016 Haggin Oaks Golf Expo. First things first, though. We will be on hand in Portland with [...]

Battle at the Butte offers golfers one last chance to play in a premier event

Nothing else is quite like an individual stroke-play golf tournament. The pressure of having to go it alone when every stroke counts is only matched by the exhilaration felt by playing well under such conditions. With this in mind, two years ago Black Butte Ranch created The Battle at the Butte Individual Championship, a 36-hole stroke-play championship that will be held for the third consecutive year Oct. 2-4 at both Glaze Meadow and Big Meadow. At stake is a chance to go it alone while taking on top-notch players from around the state.“The tournament was fashioned off the Mirror Pond Invitational (Central [...]

John Fought likes the progress of Glaze Meadow

Like any world-class architect, John Fought wants to see his design continually mature into the stunning golf course he had originally envisioned. The renowned architect, a native Oregonian who now lives in Arizona, led the way on the $3.75 renovation of Glaze Meadow that was completed in 2012. The renovation transformed Glaze Meadow from an overgrown and out-of-date course into a gorgeous throwback design that is playable for golfers of all skill levels. Glaze Meadow initially reopened to almost universal praise. But a crucial element to the renovation is how well the golf course matures well after the course [...]

Adult/Child Golf School can strengthen bonds

Golf has long been a bonding experience between parents and children, passed for generations from father to son and mother to daughter. Maybe it is the way golf can be played for a lifetime, fostering years of experiences to savor. Perhaps it is the joy that is felt by sharing a game both a parent and child love, even long after that child has grown into an adult. Whatever it is about golf, there just is something about the shared experiences that brings us closer together. And more than that, recent research suggests that parents and children forge strong [...]

Golf swings are mysterious things.

It seems that everything could feel right. Then suddenly, a presumably well-struck golf ball flies uncontrollably toward towering pines that are sure to jail the next shot. The feeling can be a helpless one for a golfer, especially if he or she cannot detect the flaw that led to such a wayward shot. All of a sudden second guesses turn those confident golf swings into tentative movements. Before you know it, you are this guy. A golfer’s natural instinct is often to blame something with the swing movement. But before you go Tin Cup, you might be best served by [...]
