Big Meadow to remain open until weather no longer permits

Glaze Meadow is closed for the season 2018, but Big Meadow still has some golf left

Late October tends to bring a certain calm to Black Butte Ranch.

Yes, the sound of a golf club making flush contact with a golf ball can still be heard throughout Big Meadow, but it is often fainter and more infrequent than during the meat of the golf season. At Glaze Meadow, which is now closed for the season, the sound has disappeared altogether, producing a quiet that can only be found during the offseason.

The fall weather has cooperated with golfers, bringing above-average temperatures to Black Butte Ranch for almost the entirety of October. And with highs forecasted to reach into the low 60s this weekend, the golf season still has some life left.

In fact, Big Meadow will remain open though at least the beginning of November. And the price could hardly be better. Through the end of the season, play Big Meadow for just $35 and add a cart for just $10 more.

“The course is in great condition for this time of year,” said Dan McCleery, assistant golf professional at Black Butte Ranch. “The greens and tee boxes were aerified a week ago, but they have already began to heal. Overall they are in great shape.”

In addition, Black Butte Ranch’s Big Meadow irrigation project will continue, but the work is primarily out of the way of play.

Big Meadow will remain open indefinitely, and not close as long as weather permits play. Of course, they do say all good things must come to an end, and that is always the case with the Central Oregon golf season.

Black Butte Ranch’s basic rule of thumb is that all 18 holes will remain open until the weather is bleak enough that the tee sheet begins to look sparse. After that, most likely nine holes will remain open until either snow and ice become a regular visitor. And Big Meadow’s driving range will continue to stay open daily, so long as the snow and ice stays away.

Big Meadow’s Golf Shop will be open from 8 a.m. to dusk as long as the course remains open. Once the winter weather closes the course for the season, the shop will remain open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. In addition, the shop will remain open on Christmas Eve until noon. And with most everything in the shop on sale, the opportunity to pick up a gift or two before the holiday season is plentiful.
