Hike

A favorite pass time at Central Oregon resorts is hiking. There is so much to see and do that you will want to see all of it. Our backyard is the 1.6 million acre Deschutes National Forest, creating endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Black Butte Lockout is a scenic volcanic cone with two fire lookouts. Black Butte looks like a misplaced mountain but is packed with fantastic views. It is a moderately strenuous 3.8-mile hike to the panoramic summit, gaining 1,600 feet of elevation. From the top, you will have views of the fall colors painting a vibrant picture of Oregon. See the Sisters area and a panoramic view of Black Butte Ranch.

Proxy Falls is a great hike for families. The lava-rock and dirt trail is an easy 1.5-mile loop. Along the walk, you will encounter two distinctly different waterfall views nestled in the forest. At the bottom of the falls, it is possible to get close to feel the water. Proxy Falls is among Oregon’s most photographed waterfalls, so do not forget your camera.

Along your hikes collect leaves that are unique in color and shape. Later, press them into a journal. You can either leave the dry leaves in the journal or take them off, and an imprint of the leaf will be printed on the paper. Then, layer your pictures on top to create an original scrapbook. Write where you were and what you did next to the picture so you can remember your adventures at Black Butte Ranch.
