The Civil War comes to Black Butte Ranch

Annual tournament at Glaze Meadow pits Oregon versus Oregon State

Oregon has long been a state divided. Ducks versus Beavers. Oregon and Oregon State. It seems as if it is impossible to live in the state without pledging allegiance to one or the other.

But Black Black Butte Ranch offers a way for the two sides to come together in the spirit of a fun competition — The 2nd Annual Civil War Golf Tournament at Glaze Meadow. Scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 7, the golf tournament pits Duck fans against Beaver believers in a blast of a one-day event.

“The first tournament played last year was so much fun for everybody,” said Jeff Fought, Black Butte Ranch’s director of golf. “We are really excited to bring it back and we are hoping this becomes a long-standing tradition at Black Butte Ranch.”

The tournament’s format is most definitely unique.

The field will be made up of 20 two-player teams to represent the Ducks, the first 20 that sign up, and 20 more two-player teams that will represent Oregon State. Teams will be divided entirely by which school they represent and flighted according to the team’s handicap.

Playing a two man-scramble, each Beaver team will face off against a Duck team for 18 holes of team match play. The winner of each match receives a point — Ryder Cup style — and the winner is determined by which school’s representatives tally the most points by day’s end.

“With football in full swing, and fall in the air, there is no better time for a tournament like this,” Fought said. “But the weather in Central Oregon is still great in early October, and the conditioning will be near perfect. Most of all, it’s a relaxed, fun format that everybody should enjoy.”

The cost to enter is $95 per player or $190 per team, and includes cart, practice, balls, continental breakfast, tailgate party luncheon on the Glaze Meadow deck, KPs, LDs, and a whole lot of school pride. There are special rates for annual passholders, too.

The Civil War golf tournament won’t tee off until Sunday, Oct. 7, but registration has already begun for this new tradition at Black Butte Ranch. Break out your Oregon or Oregon State colors and compete in a fun day that will be the perfect event to close out the golf season. Lodging specials are also available for participants.
