Game improvement made easier by group lessons

This is no secret. Black Butte Ranch boasts an exceptional group of golf professionals. Still, signing up for golf lessons can be intimidating for some.

We do understand. Which is why the Ranch has put so much effort into crafting group lessons that help ease that intimidation factor.

Black Butte Ranch has among the largest instructional programs in Central Oregon, offering an almost endless selection of classes and clinics, each tailored for a specific purpose. That includes our three-day Spring Tune Up classes (dates are May 4-6, May 11-13 and May 18-20). For $105, students spend three days in small groups with our pros going over the fundamentals of the game, including chipping, putting, full swing and bunker play. Each day also includes nine holes after the clinic

“They are very popular,” Jeff Fought, director of golf at Black Butte Ranch, says of the classes. “They are a great way to start out the season.”

The tune-ups are just the beginning. Black Butte Ranch also offers a three-day ladies-only golf school (dates June 30-July 2, July 7-9, July 14-16 and July 21-23), which is designed for women of all abilities.

For younger golfers, Black Butte Ranch has designed a unique three-day adult/child school (Aug. 4-6, Aug. 11-13 and Aug. 18-20) where a parent and child can learn (and play nine holes each day) together. And of course, our popular three-day junior golf camps (June 15-17, June 22-24, June 29-July 1, July 6-8, July 13-15, July 20-22, July 27-29, Aug. 3-5, Aug. 10-12, Aug. 17-19, Aug. 24-26).

And relatively new to our stable of programs is our two-day 100-yards-and-in clinic (May 23-24, May 30-31, June 6-7, June 13-14, June 20-21, June 27-28, July 4-5, July 11-12, July 18-19, July 25-26, Aug. 1-2, Aug. 8-9, Aug. 15-16, Aug. 22-23, Aug. 29-30), which focuses on solely on the short game.

Why so focused on just one part of the game?

“You can be more successful teaching somebody how to play 100 yards and in than you can do anything,” Fought says. “Students quickly get it. It’s not about strength. This is all about technique and understanding.”

Black Butte Ranch also customizes golf schools for specific groups. Of course, if you would prefer to get a one-on-one lesson, we offer that, too.

Our staff of PGA professionals include Fought, Glaze Meadow head pro Tom Baker, director of instruction George Mack Jr., and our assistant pros Emily Anderson Stewart and Dan McCleery.

“There are not many staffs out there that have the experience of our staff,” Fought says.
