Catch and Release Fly Fishing at Black Butte Ranch
Located in a scenic locations on the Ranch, Phalarope Lake is a splendid place to learn to fly fish. This is the only lake on the Ranch reserved for fly fishing (we let the wildlife enjoy the others). Barbless hooks and “catch and release” procedures are required. An Oregon fishing license is also needed, available online at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
During the summer, free fly-fishing clinics are offered through The Fly Fisher’s Place. Flies and fly rods can be obtained through Lakeside Activity Center. (Must be 12 years or older to use the fly rods.) They don’t actually go fishing during the clinic, so a fishing license is not required for the class. If anyone is going fishing on the Lake or around Central Oregon after the clinic, then make sure you are properly licensed.
Rod Rental Rates through Lakeside Activity Center:
Flies are $2.50 each
*Must be 12 years or older to use the fly rod.
