WINTER RECREATION

 
The Quiet Season

Winter is a very special time at Black Butte Ranch. The Ranch is a bit quieter and time moves more slowly. Photographers try to capture the brillance of the fresh snow on the Cascades or the Aspen grove flocked in snow.

The bike paths are perfect for cross country skiing or snowshoeing, and our Rental Shop can set you up with all the right equipment. Ski or snowshoe on the The Sisters Community Trails a non-motorized trail system that connects downtown Sisters, neighborhoods and regional trails. Popular routes | map

If you're feeling more adventurous, alpine skiing & snowboarding are minutes away from Black Butte Ranch. Hoodoo Ski Area is just 13 miles west on Highway 20 and Mt. Bachelor is 52 miles through Bend.

Ray Benson Snow Park, Three Creeks Lake Snow Park, McKenzie Pass and Santiam Pass Snowparks are a few miles away. Maps may be found online for many of these snowparks: . Suttle Lake Area | Hoodoo Ski & Tubing Area

Trails for all Seasons guidebook is available for purchase at the Rec Center, the Rental Shop and at the Front Desk for $4.00. The Sisters Oregon Guide has many great suggestions as well. The Rental Shop also sells Annual Snow Park Permits.The Local Hikes site also has many recommendations.

Skiing & Snowshoeing on the Ranch

Cross-country skiing along the golf course or around the meadow can be a highlight of a winter Ranch experience and is a great place to enjoy the tranquility and crisp mountain air.

The bike paths and trails near the golf courses may be used for XC skiing and snowshoeing when there is at least 6" of snow.

Trails will be groomed at Big Meadow-please use them. Please stay OFF the tees, greens, moundings and bunkers. Restrooms are open at the picnic area and on Big Meadow #4.

Snowshoers - please walk two feet away from the XC Ski trail to preserve the groomed track.

 

 

XC Ski & Snowshoe Rentals

The Rental Shop at the Glaze Meadow Recreation Center is open year round for outdoor equipment rentals and repair. They carry cross country skis and snowshoes for rent, as well as accessories. Call 541-595-5877. More

 

Sledding

There are many great places for sledding on Santiam Pass, just 13 miles west of the Ranch on Hwy 20. The Rental Shop at the Glaze Meadow Recreation Center sells toboggans for kids.

On the Ranch, sledding is limited to the southern side of Big Meadow 14.

Please help protect the golf courses during the winter.There must be at least 6" of snow before anyone can walk, ski or snowshoe on the golf courses; The golf department has asked that everyone stay off the tees, greens and bunkers. Please walk along the groomed path on the edge of the course or use the bike paths.

 

Local Adventures

Wanderlust Tours provides excellent half-day guided Snowshoe Tours. With over 30 inches of snow in the Cascades, the conditions are perfect for snowshoeing in the backcountry. All trips are led by professional naturalist guides, who take guests off trails and away from other people into the snowy forests of the Cascade Mountains. Three Sisters Backcountry Access offer snowmobile tours, skiing and portage services, courses and training in avalanche safety. This is a great way to see a lot of country in a short amount of time.
