Photography in the Aspens is a weekend intensive workshop for intermediate / advanced photographers with noted photographer Rick Schafer. Participants are guided through a study of nature and an analysis of the light, which transforms into photographic technique.
The weekend includes several photo shoots on location, both at Black Butte Ranch and nearby areas. Classroom work sessions include file management, gallery preparation and a print session. A wine reception and student show and a student slide show and critique session round out the event. Some light meals are included.

This year's Photography in the Aspens takes place Friday, September 26, Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2008.
Friday, September 26
3:00pm: Introductions and objectives. Classroom session.
4:00 - 6:00pm: Evening photo shoot - a walk around Big Meadow
6:00 - 7:00pm: Dinner at Big Meadow Clubhouse
7:00 - 9:00pm: Classroom Session: download and select, file management.

Saturday, September 27
5:30am Photo shoot - sunrise on Phalarope Lake
"Grab and go" continental breakfast
10:30am Metolius photo shoot
11:00am Camp Sherman store / lunch break
11:00am - 4:00pm Work session: begin printing gallery images.The next assignment.
4:00pm - 6:00pm Evening photo shoot. Location TBD.
6:30pm - 8:00pm Wine and cheese reception, view student gallery. The gallery will be on display at Black Butte Ranch. The framed prints will be available for pick up or mailed to partipants after November 1.
Meal Break
8:00pm - 10:00pm Classroom session: digital darkroom, "Mistakes into Opportunities"

5:30am: Photo shoot - lakes on the Ranch
"Grab and go" continental breakfast

Classroom session - select and prepare two images for student critique session

This workshop is designed for intermediate - advanced digital photographers. Class size is limited to 18 participants to allow for increased opportunities for individualized instruction.

$225 tuition includes workshop and some meals: Dinner at the Lodge Friday evening, "grab and go" continental breakfasts for Saturday and Sunday morning, box lunch Saturday, wine and cheese reception Saturday evening.
The Lodge Restaurant and Aspen Lounge will be available if participants would like additional meals.
A 10% discount on lodging is available through the Black Butte Ranch Rental Program - ask for the special Photography in the Aspens rate.

About Rick Schafer |
 |
Rick Schafer is a professional photographer and had the opportunity to study under his stepfather, the late Photographer Laureate of Oregon, Ray Atkeson for 12 years, and has built on that experience to develop a photographic style all his own.
Rick continues the tradition of Ray’s best- selling Oregon, Oregon II and Oregon III with his own journey across the state. Rick’s other books include Oregon IV, Oregon Golf, Portrait of Oregon, Magnificent Places: Oregon Coast and McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood Cookbook.
