Coming in August: A parent-child bonding experience like none other

Golf has stood the test of time in large part because the game has been for generations passed on from father to son and mother to daughter like a sacred family heirloom. That spirit of bonding is baked into the game itself, a vital ingredient for golf’s future.

It is in this vein that years ago Black Butte Ranch created the Adult/Child Three-Day Golf Schools. Open to golfers of all abilities, the schools are designed for a young golfer to share the learning experience with a parent. There may be no better bonding experience.

With three sessions in August (Aug. 3-5, Aug. 10-12, Aug. 17-19), the Adult/Child Schools are among the highlights of another busy month at Black Butte Ranch. It is also among the most special of our offerings.

“I think it is great for bonding between the parent and the child,” said George Mack Jr., Black Butte Ranch’s director of instruction, who has taught the Schools for about 15 years. “The kid and his or her parent get to enjoy golf together, and that’s the important part. And they can learn how to help each other on the golf course.”

From 9-11 a.m. each day one parent and one child will learn the fundamentals of the game together. And to finish the school, both parent and child get to share a round of golf together and apply what they’ve learned.

Most importantly, the lessons are meant to be shared in a way that will make golf forever a family experience. In other words, the Adult/Child Golf School is not your average golf lesson.

The cost to attend the clinic is $350 for one parent and one child. Each additional child is $150. Every attendee will also receive lunch and a free round of golf at either Big Meadow or Glaze Meadow at the conclusion of the golf school.

ALSO IN AUGUST

  • The two-day 100-yards-and-in clinic (Aug. 6-7, Aug. 13-14, Aug. 20-21, Aug. 27-28) continue through August. The clinic focuses on solely on the short game, which is the quickest way to shave strokes.

  • Every Thursday through August, Glaze Meadow’s practice putting green will host the Junior Putting Challenge. The fun events begin at 12:30 p.m. and include divisions for youngsters age 6 to 9-years-old (nine holes), 10-14 years old (18 holes) and 15-17 years old (18 holes). Cost is just $5 and includes golf balls and an ice cream sandwich. Immediately after, the staff at Black Butte Ranch will offer SNAG Golf, perhaps the most enjoyable way to introduce kids to the game.

  • Our popular three-day junior golf camps (Aug. 1-3, Aug. 8-10, Aug. 15-17, Aug. 22-24) are a great place for kids to sharpen their skills. The Ranch tailors instruction to the age and abilities of each student, with a 1½-hour program for kids age 6 to 9 and a 2½-hour program for kids age 10 to 17. Each class size is limited to 15 golfers, which allows for plenty of attention from Black Butte Ranch’s staff of golf professionals.
