Watercolor naturalist, Don Zylius moved West from the urban confines of Waukegan, IL to Central OR in 1970. Commercial art endeavors occupied his first few years in Bend, but the region’s natural splendor proved irresistible. Gradually he found himself more and more immersed in the delicate wildlife and floral paintings for which he is now so recognized.
Allthough largely self-taught, Zylius’ amorphous wet-wash painting techniques evoke admiration from peers and collectors alike. With an unmatched talent he brings to many of his watercolors a charming and mystical mood rarely achieved with this
medium.
Zylius is an artist whose paintings honor the gentle horizons that surround him in Central Oregon. His use of real life colors and detail invite us to linger and enjoy the outdoors. His finished paintings are images of freshness and immediacy: They become glorious visions that touch our hearts.
His works have received national attention. Gray’s Sporting Journal has featured Zylius’ art on five occasions. Its publishing division, GSJ Press, included a full-color Zylius painting in its collector’s edition entitled The Art Of Shooting Flying. Zylius was one of fifty wildlife artists to be selected for the honor. He was chosen to show in the Cincinnati Zoo’s “Wondrous Wildlife” exhibition.
Zylius was a co-winner of Best of Show-Watercolor at the Western Art Association Show in 2005. In 2006 he was CA. Ducks Unlimited companion artist. Don has been twice commissioned by CAL-OR Stream Enhancement Organization; in 2002 and 2007.
A Zylius watercolor hangs in the permanent collection at the Roberts Field airport terminal in Redmond, OR. Don schedules watercolor workshops for artists of all skill ranges.
Don Zylius is an artist with a gentle heart and a grand imagination. He truly enjoys nature and this feeling is revealed in every flower, leaf and animal. Collect one of his paintings and you too, can journey into his world-whenever you like.
