Golf season is not over yet

Mild weather, fantastic conditions on tap at Black Butte Ranch

Who said the golf season ends before Labor Day? At Black Butte Ranch, there is still so much fantastic golf to be played.

In fact, October in Central Oregon can be a wonderful time for golfers, filled with relatively dry, mild days, autumn colors, and golf courses free of the summer crowds. This is no vague notion either. The forecast at Black Butte Ranch could hardly be better, with high temperatures in the 60s and hardly a cloud in sight.

Best of all, Black Butte Ranch has dropped to its lowest rates of the season: $54 during primetime and $49 after 1 p.m. In addition, Black Butte Ranch’s fall lodging and unlimited golf package starts at just $99 per person, per night.

And the conditions are prime.

Black Butte Ranch has long made the decision to aerify later in the season than nearly every golf course in Central Oregon, extending the window in which golfers can take advantage of prime conditions.

“Golf in October is quietly a perfect time of year to play,” said Jeff Fought, Black Butte Ranch’s director of golf. “The conditions are still at their peak, especially because of our late aerification schedule, and the weather can be fantastic. Plus, the courses tend to be calm and peaceful.”

The greens at Big Meadow aren’t scheduled to be aerified until Oct. 16, which will close Big Meadow for one week. Then Big Meadow will reopen on Oct. 23, the same day the aerification program will begin at Glaze Meadow. On that day, Glaze Meadow will close for the season. Big Meadow will remain open as long as weather permits.

October golf can be a bit different than summer play, of course.

In summer, morning tee times tend to be prized. But in October, which can bring cool mornings and pleasant days, it’s the afternoon times that tend to be the most coveted.

And the beauty is unrivaled. Both Big Meadow and Glaze Meadow are awash in fall colors, a product of the turning aspen trees, and the surrounding Cascade Peaks are under a fresh blanket of white that bursts in the fall sunshine.

It really can be a special time of year.

“We see a lot of local play this time of year,” Fought said. “Those who live here know that now is time to get in a ton of golf in before the season ends, and they know the weather holds up better than many outside the area know.”
