New tournament tees off on August 18, and combines the best of some of Black Butte Ranch’s most long-standing tournaments

There is no better new tradition than an old tradition. That might seem like a contradiction, but it’s exactly the foundation for the inaugural Black Butte Invitational, which is scheduled for Aug. 18-20.

Among Black Butte Ranch’s Signature Golf Events, the Black Butte Invitational was designed to be team-oriented with fun formats. This idea is hardly a new one. It was the same premise that made The Homeowner Guest Classic Invitational one of Black Butte Ranch’s most longstanding traditions. And it was the basis for the Battle of the Butte.

Now Black Butte Ranch has combined the team-friendly tournaments into what we hope will be the start of a grand, new tradition with the Black Butte Invitational.

“I think it is going to go exceptionally well,” said Jeff Fought, Black Butte Ranch’s longtime director of golf. “We are committed to building this tournament, and we think this will become a new tradition for our homeowners and our guests to enjoy for years to come. I can’t wait to get it started.”

Like both the Homeowner Guest Classic and the Battle of the Butte, the Black Butte Invitational utilizes a unique two-person team format to set it apart from many other events.

The Black Butte Invitational features three fun-filled days of events. including a Friday night horse race, a two-round team tournament (a first-round best ball at Glaze Meadow and final-round scramble at Big Meadow), and a best ball putting tournament. Off the course, golfers will be treated a wine and cheese social, “Dinner on the Deck,” and Sunday lunch, in addition to continental breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday. Divisions for both men and women include gross and net prize payouts.

Participants can either invite a single playing partner, or pull together an entire group of friends to make several teams and play with and compete against each other. Best of all, whether a man or woman, or a competitive or more recreational player, there is a place in this tournament for every golfer.

It’s essentially as if the Homeowner Guest Classic Invitational was suddenly opened up to every golfer.

“The format presents an opportunity to get an entire group of guys or gals together to play as both friends and competitors,” Fought said. “There aren’t that many tournaments formatted that way. It takes the fun and camaraderie that comes with playing with friends during an ordinary Saturday round and adds an extra competitive element that can’t quite be replicated during an ordinary round.”

Even if you can’t make it to the inaugural Black Butte Invitational, Black Butte Ranch has more tournament golf in store. And each event has a team-friendly format.

From Aug. 26-29, the Oregon Golf Association Oregon Amateur Four-Ball will tee off at Big Meadow with golfers from across the state. Sign up for the tournament at www.OGA.org.

Then another in Black Butte Ranch’s Signature Golf Series takes center stage from Sept. 14-16. Pairing world-class golf with incredible wine, Grapes & Golf is a couples event unlike anything else in Central Oregon. The three-day event begins with a wine and appetizer reception on Thursday. The tournament tees off Friday at Glaze Meadow with a best ball, followed by an exquisite four-course wine dinner. Grapes & Golf finishes Saturday with a round of Stableford at Big Meadow, followed by an awards luncheon.

Each tournament still has plenty of space is available, but don’t wait much longer.
